FAQs
I don’t have a business. Is Sherwood & Co, PS. the right accounting firm for me?
Yes! While our focus is on corporate tax prep and accounting, we value and love our personal clients! We would love to help you with your annual tax filing or bookkeeping needs, whether you have multiple properties, a unique family arrangement or you’d just like to not worry about the technicalities of filing each year. We’ll help you to walk away each tax season with as much money left in your pocket as possible, using our decades worth of tax prep experience and strategic financial planning.
Why should I use an accounting firm to do my taxes instead of filing myself?
With decades worth of accounting and tax prep experience and education, we tend to offer a more nuanced approach to tax returns and may be able to spot opportunities that you may miss on your own. Of course we support you in whichever route you take - if you would prefer to use a self-serve tax filing service, we would love to support you through financial consultations if you’d like any help with your own filing. From our experience, we find that our accounting and tax prep clients tend to walk away with a much larger tax return or owe less than they did when they used self-serve services in prior years - ultimately, this means it can actually be less expensive to use our services than to do it on your own!
How much should I expect to pay for my services?
Because tax returns are each as unique as the person needing them, it’s nearly impossible to create a one-size-fits-all price. However, we also understand that shopping around for an accountant or tax specialist can be time consuming when you don’t know price ranges!
Thus, our personal clients tend to pay between $400-$600 and our business clients on average pay between $1200-$2000+ depending on the complexity of the business. All business returns include a complimentary personal return.
Will my return be finished by April 15th?
If you’re on a time crunch or need your return filed sooner for any reason, we will do our best to ensure that your return is filed as soon as possible, and yes! This might mean April 15th or even earlier. If you aren’t stressed for time, or if you need more time to gather your documents for this year, your return will be placed on extension and filed anytime before October 15th.
Is there an additional fee for going on extension?
Not at all! And in fact, if you need additional time to gather your documents or if you aren’t stressed for time, we are always grateful for out clients who don’t mind waiting an extra few months, as it helps us to even out our workflow throughout the year.
What information will I need to gather?
Since all of our clients have different financial situations, each one will need different documentation for the year. While this may sound intimidating, we will ensure that we walk you through all of the documents that you will uniquely need so that you aren’t left guessing at any stage! That said, some of the most common documents that our clients might need are:
W-2s
1099s (interest, dividends, brokerage statements, mortgage interest)
Student loan documents
Charitable contributions
Income and expenses for a small business or rental
